A legal notice was served on the Jagannath University authorities on Wednesday over the university’s order to married and pregnant students for leaving hall.
Barrister Md Solaiman Tushar sent the legal notice to the JnU vice-chancellor, registrar, proctor and Provost of Begum Fazilatuness Mujib hall. The notice sought withdrawal of the order on the married and pregnant students within five working days, otherwise, the lawyer will draw attention of the apex court over the issue.
The notice said the JnU authorities issued a notice on September 25 asking the married and pregnant students of Begum Fazilatuness Mujib hall to leave the hall which was against the constitution.
Prof. Dr. Dipika Rani, Begum Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall Provost informed, "Due to seat limitations, sometime seat allotment cannot be done in a smooth way. Students who are alone in Dhaka city and are not well-off get priority."
"There is no medical center near the hall. So, pregnant students may face difficulties when they become ill", she said. As per sections 27and 28 of constitution, every citizen have equal rights, so such decision of the university is conflicting with the constitution and it is barrier in achieving higher education of female students, it said.
