The poor drainage facilities at Jagannath University (JnU) worried students and teachers of the University of increasing Mosquito-borne diseases as Bangladesh grappling with sharp increase of Dengue caseload.
A little rain creates waterlogging occasionally at the University as the drains are filled with filth and garbage. The concerned authorities seems paying little heed to the problems though it bear risk of affecting hundreds of students there.
Incoherence, indifference, obstacles and lack of work plan are the barriers to the healthy environment around the drains there, our JnU correspondent reports.
Specialists find the drains as the suitable place for mosquito’s infestation. Nowadays the country is facing a serious outbreak of Dengue. To make the university campus safe from mosquitoes, the specialists stressed unclogging the drains.
The drain adjacent to the JnU main gate is clogged with polythene, plastic materials, clout etc. The other drains around the New Academic Building are full of bottles, plastic materials, food wastes, one-time cups, polythenes etc which deter the regular water flow. Same view is seen in the Social Science Building drains.
The garbages which were thrown in the university open library drain are spreading a stench and causing mosquito infestation.
The polluted water in the cafeteria drain creates bubbles like the drains of the university Administration Building. That state of the drains have given the birth and life of alga and weedy which allure mosquito infestation.
The specialists suggest setting up substantial bins to resist the drains from being polluted and clogged. To save the students from the fear of Dengue and to keep the campus environment healthy, there is no doubt about effective drainage management. Pranta Das Gupta, student of Department of Finance expresses his frustration about the campus environment. "The drainage management is getting worse day by day which increases the fear of dengue. This state of the university is unforeseen", he said. "The concerned authority must take steps as soon as possible to make the students feel free from the fear of Dengue."
Prof. Dr. Md. Abdul Kader, the Convener of the university cleanliness committee and the Chairman of Geography and Environment Department said that they have started fulfilling their duties and they are proceeding.
He said, "To resist Dengue we have cleaned the rooftop of the New Academic Building. The drain in front of the dormitory is cleaned and the others will be cleaned gradually."
The Member Secretary of the cleanliness committee and the Deputy Registrar Mohammad Kamal Hossain said that they are trying to kill mosquitoes by spraying and using medicines with the help of the city corporation.
"The cleanliness committee has the responsibility to keep the campus clean. The engineering department has also taken steps to keep some drain clean", said the university head engineer Md. Helal Uddin.
