Begum Rokeya University (BRU), Rangpur has banned all forms of political activities involving teachers, officials and other employees on campus.
This decision was taken at the 108th syndicate meeting of the university on Monday (October 28). BRU Vice Chancellor Professor Shawkat Ali announced the decision following the Syndicate meeting.
This decision comes following the imposition of a similar ban on student politics at BRU on August 12, to curb political activities at the university. Meanwhile, student politics has been banned in at least 19 public universities, four government colleges and 10 government medical colleges after the fall of autocratic Awami League government on August 5 following the student-mass uprising. Alongside student politics, a ban has been placed on politics of teachers, officials and employees of 27 of these institutions.
The universities where politics have been banned include Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Comilla University, Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET), Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), Noakhali University of Engineering and Technology, Haji Mohammad Danesh University of Science and Technology, Begum Rokeya University, Bangladesh Textile University, Pabna University of Engineering and Technology, Maulana Bhasani University of Engineering and Technology in Tangail, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University in Kishoreganj, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Sylhet Agricultural University and Barishal University. Of these, teacher-official-employee politics has also been Barishal University.
Of these, teacher-official-employee politics has also been banned alongside student politics in DUET and Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University.
The medical colleges where politics have been banned include Dhaka Medical College, Sir Salimullah Medical College, Sylhet Osmani Medical College, Chittagong Medical College, Mymensingh Medical College, Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College, Sher-e-Bangla Medical College, Kushtia Medical College, Rangpur Medical College and Rangamati Medical College.
Other than in Dhaka Medical College, all forms of politics have also been banned alongside student politics in all the rest. Teacher-official-employee politics has been banned in Santahar College, alongside the prohibition on student politics there.
According to a recent survey results, 84 per cent students wanted a complete ban on party-affiliated student politics. 16 per cent of the students hoped for party-affiliated politics in a reformed manner on campus. Only 0.20 per cent wanted student politics to remain as it is, unchanged, on campus.
