Shakib Al Hasan, the most illustrious figure in Bangladesh's cricket history, has expressed his desire to play his final Test match on home soil. Unlike many of his predecessors, Shakib hopes to bid farewell to cricket from the field, in front of his home crowd. He has previously stated that, given the chance, he would like his last Test to be in Bangladesh.
However, Shakib is acutely aware that this is not a straightforward matter. Since being elected as a Member of Parliament for the Bangladesh Awami League in January this year, his public image has undergone a significant shift. Following the political upheaval on August 5th, many Awami League leaders and activists have faced attacks from opponents.
Amidst this turmoil, Shakib has been implicated in a case related to the murder of garment worker Rubel in Adabor. Shakib has indicated that he will only play his final Test in Mirpur in October if adequate security is assured. Additionally, he has requested guarantees for his safe departure from the country after the match.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has, however, declined Shakib's request, with the board president passing the matter to the government. Interim Youth and Sports Advisor Asif Mahmud has now addressed Shakib's security concerns.
Speaking at an event on Sunday where Grameenphone's dividend cheque was handed over to the Workers' Welfare Fund, the sports advisor emphasised Shakib's dual identity. "We must remember that Shakib Al Hasan has two identities. He is a player, and as such, he will be provided with the necessary security. On the other hand, he is also a politician who has been involved with the Awami League. There are mixed reactions among the public regarding these two identities. As a player, we will ensure he receives the required security."
In a somewhat conditional tone, the advisor added that if there is public resentment due to his political identity, Shakib himself must address it. "Shakib needs to clarify his political stance. From the state's perspective, we are obliged to provide security to every citizen, and we will certainly do so," Asif Mahmud added.
After reassuring Shakib about his security as a player, Asif Mahmud also addressed the ongoing case. "Regarding the murder case against him, we have already stated, and the Ministry of Law has also confirmed, that if the investigation finds no involvement, his name will be
cleared initially."
