Nine members of the muggers and organised gang of kidnappers were arrested by Shah Makhdum thana police from Kasiadanga and Boalia thana areas on Wednesday morning.
Police recovered a smartwatch and a knife used for kidnapping from the possession of the arrested accused.
The arrested accused were identified as- Anfor Rahman Pappu,21, SM Sajedur Rahman Saikat,20, Mir Wasiuzzaman Wasim,20, Habib,24, Mahfuzur Rahman Alvi,24, Masud Rana Mim,23, Shimul,22, Sabbir Hossain Subash,26, and Tonmoy Islam Sajib,27. Zamirul Islam of RMP Media Cell informed in a press release.
It is learnt, arrested Pappu called Barendra University student Zahid Hasan Jewel,21, at a stall of Sheikh Para under Borobongram for having a cup of tea with him. When Jewel went there, Pappu and the other accused boarded him on a motorbike and took him inside a mango orchard in the Baliapukur area where the accused snatched away Taka 6,000, a headphone, two smartwatches and a mobile phone from his possession by beating him severely. The accused also threatened Jewel and took Tk 6,400 from his bKash account through the send money process and demanded Tk. 20,000 more from him. The victim informed the incident to his brother-in-law when he sent Tk 5,000 to the mobile phones of the accused through bKash. The accused also threatened the brother-in-law of Jewel not to disclose the incident to anyone.
After the incident, Jewel filed a case with the Shah Makhdum police station in this connection.Being directed by Deputy Police Commissioner of Shah Makhdum Thana Nur Alam Siddiqui, SI Abdul Matin with his team started an operation to arrest the accused.
Acting on a tip-off, the police team arrested the accused from their respective houses on the morning of 27 September. Police recovered a Smartwatch from the possession of accused Habib and a knife used for kidnapping from the possession of accused Habib.
The arrested accused informed they are members of an organised muggers and abductors gang who abduct persons and realise ransom money from them. The accused were also involved in the act of organised smuggling of drugs, theft, mugging, kidnapping and clashes. The arrested accused were produced before the court and were sent to jail.
