The fourth Police Memorial Day-2020 was observed across the country on Sunday paying rich tribute to the martyred policemen, who sacrificed their lives while discharging their duties to maintain law and order.
On the occasion, police arranged various programmes across the country. Our correspondent sent news items on the issue.
In Chattogram, the day was also observed with honour amid various activities. A award giving ceremony, discussion meeting and a rally was held in the city marking the day, reports our Staff Correspondent from Ctg.
Chittagong University VC Dr. Shirin Akhter attended the programme as the chief guest while DIG of Chittagong Range Khandaker Golam Faruq chaired it. Among others Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md Mahabubar Rahman, SM Rashidul Haque PPM-Services and Superintendent of police Sahab Uddin were present at the time as special guests.
In Rangpur, high-ranking police officials placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar on Rangpur Police Lines premises in the morning and observed one-minute silence to show profound respect to the martyred police personnel, reports our Rangpur Correspondent.
Later, family members of 15 martyred police personnel placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar to pay tribute to their dear ones who were killed on duty. On the occasion, DIG of Rangpur range of Police Devdas Bhattacharya attended a memorial discussion with Superintendent of Police (SP) Biplob Kumar Sarker in the chair. RMP Commissioner Abdul Alim Mahmud was present at the event, among others.
Family members and relatives of 15 martyred police officers were accorded reception and honoured on the occasion.
In Kishoreganj, the day was observed in the district with various programmes. On the occasion, Kishoreganj District Police Administration arranged a discussion at Kishoreganj Police Lines, reports our Kishoreganj Correspondent.
Police Super Md. Mashrukur Rahman Khaled presided over the discussion, while it was addressed, among others by Deputy Commissioner Md. Sarowar Murshed Chowhdury, Zila Parished Chairman Md Zillur Rahman, District Awami League General Secretary Advocate MA Afzol and Kishoreganj Municipality Mayor Md. Parvez Mia.
In Bogura, the day was observed to commemorate the deceased members of the police force who died on duty on Sunday.
On the occasion, deceased police members were paid tribute by placing wreath at the temporary martyr altar set up at Bogura police lines. Later, gifts were distributed among the family members of the deceased members at a discussion meeting held at the Police Lines School and College Auditorium.
Additional Superintendent of Police Sofizul Islam presided over the discussion while Superintendent of Highway Police of Bogura region Shahid Ullah, Police Super Arifur Rahman Mondal and other officials of the force attended.
In Jhalokathi, the day was observed in the district with due honour. Marking the day, a discussion meeting and honouring ceremony was held at the district reports our Jhalakathi correspondent.
Jhalakathi Superintendent of Police Fatiha Yasmin along with other high officials paid tribute to the deceased members of the police force who died on duty by placing wreaths at Police Lines memorial. Later, gifts were distributed among the family members of the deceased police members.
In Gaibandha, the day was observed in the district as elsewhere in the country with a call to honor the police members who sacrificed their lives in line of duty, reports BSS.
Marking the day, the district police chalked out elaborate programmes to show due respect and honor to their departed colleagues.
In the morning, the police officials led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Muhammad Towhidul Islam placed floral wreath on the temporary monument set up on the ground of police liens here.
Then, a grand rally led by SP Muhammad Towhidul Islam was brought out from the police lines and ended at the same venue after parading the main roads of the town.
The programme was followed by a discussion meeting organised by district police at the drill shed of the police lines at noon.
Towhidul Islam addressed the meeting as the chief guest and District Unit General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League Abu Bakar Siddique and Mayor of Gaibandha Municipality Advocate Shah Masud Zahangir Kabir Milon were present as special guests.
Moderated by Senior Assistant Police Super Mohammad Asaduzzaman, the function was also addressed, among others, by Additional SP Moynul Haque, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar thana Khan Mohammad Shahriar, OC ofGobindaganj thana Mehedi Hasan.
The speakers said people are ever grateful to the policemen who sacrificed their lives while discharging their duties to maintain the law and order. The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave the approval to observe the Police Memorial Day since 2017 for the police officials and the members who lost their lives on duty, they added.
Four years ago, the police officials and the members who died on duty were not getting a proper departmental honor including the guard of honor at their funeral, they further added. Terming police as strength of the Independence, the chief guest said over a thousand of police members from all ranks sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence during 1971.
The district police chief also assured the family members of the policemen, who were killed on-duty, to give all sorts of assistance in the days to come. Later, the close relatives of the family members of 26 deceased policemen were given gifts and flowers on the behalf of the district police.
