Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) has launched a drive to prevent re-encroachment from Chittagong's New Market intersection to fruit market. At that time, a hawker was shot dead in a clash with the police. Besides, hawkers, policemen and city corporation officials were injured in the three-monged clash.
CCC Executive Magistrate Shahreen Ferdausi, Chaity Sarvabaidya, Md. Sabbir Rahman Sani led the operation from noon to afternoon on Monday.
About the operation, Magistrate Chaity Sarvabaidya said, “We have cleared about three hundred illegal structures that occupy roads, drains and footpaths. When the illegal occupants intervened, we brought the situation under control with the help of the police. Monitoring will continue to prevent re-encroachment.”
Pedestrians said that the sidewalks and roads were occupied and they were being evacuated and taken away in CCC vehicles. The hawkers prevented the City Corporation team from monitoring the operation. When the police came forward, the hawkers threw bricks at them. At that time the police also lobbed tear gas on them.
During the eviction, 3 policemen and 4 workers of CCC cleaning department were injured in the sudden attack by the illegal occupants. Occupants vandalized 2 dump trucks, 1 pickup and 1 aerial lift of CCC electricity sub-division. CCC is preparing to file a case in this incident During the raid, City Corporation officials and Chittagong Metropolitan Police provided assistance to the magistrates.
