Police force serving as people’s police now, says Asaduzzaman

Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said Thursday that the police force is now serving as the people's police as per the dream of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman over the force.

He was addressing the 49th founding anniversary programme of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) at Rajarbagh Police Lines here.

Dhaka mayors Md Atiqul Islam and Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, senior secretary of Home Ministry Md Mostafizur Rahman and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun also spoke with DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman in the chair.

The home minister said once people used to fear police but now they have trust and confidence in police as they go to police in any need.

Describing different humanitarian works of police, he said it was seen during the Covid-19 pandemic that offspring didn't receive corpse of mother who died from Covid-19, but police performed the last rituals.

He said DMP with 50 police stations and 34,000 manpower has been serving the capital's dwellers while total 2.10 lakh members of police are providing service in the entire country, it meant a police member is for every 825 people.

Police with its different units have been successful in curbing terrorism and militancy in the country, he said.
