Jute and Textiles Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak echoed the government's commitment to reviving the esteemed legacy of jute under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Addressing an exchange meeting of jute farmers, mill owners, and businessmen in Dinajpur district on Wednesday, Nanak highlighted the imperative of reducing dependence on imported jute seeds.
Nanak emphasised the Prime Minister's aspiration to elevate the noble status of golden fibres.
He revealed that while the country requires 6,000 metric tonnes of jute seeds, only 1,500 metric tonnes are domestically produced, necessitating the import of the remaining four and a half thousand metric tonnes from India. Nanak urged for widespread encouragement of jute seed production among farmers.
Nanak further disclosed that a 41-member committee, convened by District Administrators, has been tasked with enforcing the “Compulsory Use of Jute Wraps in Products Act-2010,” “Compulsory Use of Jute Wraps in Products Rules, 2013,” and “Jute Act, 2017.”
Strict monitoring measures will be implemented to ensure the mandatory utilisation of jute bags in rice mills across 18 rice-producing districts, including Dinajpur, he added.
Distinguished guests such as Jatiya Sangsad Whip Iqbalur Rahim MP of Dinajpur-3 Constituency, Zakaria Jaka MP for Dinajpur-1 Constituency, Md Siddiqul Alam MP for Nilphamari-4 Constituency, Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles and Jute Md. Abdur Rauf, and Director General of the Jute Directorate, Zeenat Ara, made contributions during the exchange meeting, which was presided over by Deputy Commissioner Shakil Ahmed.
