Inspired by the motto of 'Pledge of Peace', the Dhaka Metropolitan Police is making a special contribution to maintaining overall security.
The 48th anniversary of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) was inaugurated by Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun. After a short speech at the DMP headquarters on Saturday afternoon, he announced the inauguration of the programme by releasing balloons.
The 48th Anniversary Day programme of Dhaka Metropolitan Police started with a colorful procession on Saturday (February 11) at 3 pm through various formalities. Members of all levels of police units including DMP's well-equipped cavalry and band team, dog squad, SWAT, bomb disposal unit took part in the procession along with senior officers of DMP.
On the occasion of the establishment day of DMP, President Md. Abdul Hamid said, "Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), established with the aim of providing security in Dhaka city, is faithfully fulfilling its responsibilities related to the security of Dhaka city." DMP has to be more public and act as a friend of the people to uphold social security and fundamental rights of people and to improve the quality of police service. In the current reality of globalization, the members of the DMP should be enriched through advanced training and education to provide contemporary police services.
On the occasion of DMP's foundation day, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said, 'Police are being strengthened to achieve international standard capabilities in combating militancy, terrorism and cybercrime. As a result, the role of Bangladesh Police in dealing with the international, regional and local challenges of militancy and terrorism has been widely appreciated. The glorious success of the police in the United Nations peacekeeping mission has given Bangladesh a unique position in the global arena.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina further said, "Dhaka Metropolitan Police has taken various steps to make it modern, up-to-date and efficient." The contribution of DMP's efficient and alert unit Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) in countering militancy is now universally appreciated. In keeping with the changing nature of crime, DMP is working with a great reputation in the field of cyber security.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) was formed on February 1, 1976 with only 12 police stations and 6,500 personnel. There was no touch of modernity in DMP at the time of establishment. But with the entry into the era of modernization, Dhaka city started to become a populous city. The type of crime continues to increase. And new units are gradually formed to deal with and prevent them.
At present DMP has 57 divisions and 50 police stations. About 34,000 police personnel including one police commissioner, six additional police commissioners, 12 joint police commissioners, 57 deputy police commissioners are working.
Chief Guest Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal officially inaugurated the Foundation Day by cutting the cake at 4 pm. A documentary on the overall activities of DMP was screened at Rajarbagh Police Lines Auditorium at 4.15pm followed by a delightful cultural program at Rajarbagh Police Lines at 6.30pm.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Senior Secretary Public Security Department, IGP and DMP Commissioner gave separate messages. Besides, on the occasion of the 48th Foundation Day, DMP Commissioner Khandkar Golam Farooq greeted and congratulated the people of the city.
Senior Secretary Aminul Islam Khan and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun were present as special guests on the occasion. Besides, the living policemen who participated in the first resistance war of the great liberation war in 1971 along with the dignitaries and other invited guests were present.
