With only eight days remaining to finalise player registrations for the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) football, participating clubs are encountering difficulties in completing the transfer procedures due to recent developments in the country. Following the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 6 August, miscreants vandalized and looted the club offices of six-time champions Abahani and three-time champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club, leaving them unable to complete the player registration formalities within the given timeframe.
Abahani football team manager Nazrul Islam said, “We are uncertain about how to proceed in this situation. We are awaiting directives from the club's senior officials.”
In light of the recent events, officials from Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra, Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society, Sheikh Jamal DC, and Brothers Union have verbally requested the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) to extend the transfer window, which is scheduled to close on 19 August after opening on 1 June.
Club insiders have indicated that they are anticipating changes in their respective committees and have been unable to communicate with donors to secure funds for signing players.
Brothers Union manager Amer Khan stated, "We have requested the federation to extend the transfer window because it will not be possible for all clubs to complete the registration within the given time."
Bangladesh has a busy schedule ahead in both age-level and senior level football with the men's U-20 and U-17 teams set to take part in separate SAFF Championships this month in Nepal and Bhutan respectively while the national men's and women's teams are supposed to play a few FIFA friendly matches in the coming months.
The BFF elections are also scheduled to take place on October 26. But now, everything seems to be up in the air.
