There are plans to build a total of 82 bridges at a cost of around Tk 3,000 crore under the Western Bangladesh Bridge Improvement Project. So far construction work of 61 bridges has been completed.
Minister for Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader shared the information during the inauguration ceremony of a total of 37 bridges including 35 newly constructed bridges under Virtual "Western Bangladesh Bridge Improvement Project" and two bridges constructed under Rangpur Road Zone with GoB funding this morning.

“The bridges would play an effective role in establishing road networks between South Asian countries and connecting them with the Sussex Corridor, Asian Highways, BIMSTEC and SAARC Highways,” he said.
The minister further informed that of the completed, 25 bridges have already been inaugurated. Now 35 bridges were inaugurated. Of these, 19 bridges have been constructed at a cost of Tk 593 crore under Package-I under Rangpur Road Zone and 16 bridges have been constructed under Package-II at a cost of Tk 350 crore under Rajshahi Road Zone. Work on the remaining 22 bridges is underway.
He further said that it will also play a key role in transforming Bangladesh into a developed country through significant changes in the national economy, including the establishment of safe, improved and cost-effective communication with the North.
Two bridges, Buritista and Shantipur-Laltai-Bhata, built under Rangpur road zone were also inaugurated on Thursday.
Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh Ito Naoki, Chief Representative of JICA Bangladesh Office Yoho Hayakawa, engineer Mohammad Abdus Sabur, Western Bangladesh Bridge Improvement Project Project Director Khan Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan and senior officials of the Department of Roads and Highways, consulting firms and contractors were present at the occasion.
