Farmers killing harmful pests without pesticides

A huge parching festival arranged by Department of Agriculture Extension was held in Harinakundu of Jhenaidah district. Seeing the event, it was not just a festival, rather it was a get together event of the farmers, local representatives and the field level staffs of the department of agriculture extension (DAE at village Sakharidah under Chandpur union of Jhenaidah. All of them appeared in the morning to enjoy the event where the DAE officials were exchanging views how to kill the harmful pests naturally without applying any chemical pesticides.

A local organization health education of economic development (HEED) organized the programme on Monday morning at a Sakharidah field where agriculture extension officers (AEO) Mahbub Elahi and Raqibul Islam and sub assistant agriculture officer (SAAO Ramendu Kumar Biswas among others present. HEED founding president Zillur Rahman had handed over the parching sticks to AEO Mahbub Elahi. Mahbub Elahi in his speech had advised the SAAOs serving in the upazila that each and every parching stick will play role in killing the harmful insects by the birds naturally. Further, the stool of the birds will also help increase the soil fertility as well. As no pesticides will be applied on the croplands, the crop will be free from pesticides, they said.

HEED president Zillur Rahman informed that they have been implementing a number of programmes including safe food production, environment and bio-diversity conservation, education prorgrammes and income generation and some charitable activities in the upazila. The DAE officials have been extending their hands in their ongoing activities, HEED president informed.
