A few hundred people including farmers and fisherman formed a human chain at Gojaria Math area in bordering Moheshpur upazila on Tuesday to recover the irrigation canal from the clutch of some influentials.
The canals need to be re-excavated as well as they have been filled earlier.
Local ressssidents Jahid Hossain, SajedulIslkam, Serajkul Islam, Abdul Malek and Lal Mohamma of Durgapur and Begumpur village spoke at the programme. The speakers attended the human chain with banner and festoon. They said that the important irrigation canal, widely known as Padma Beel is occupied by a vested quarter for past decades hampering smooth water flow in the croplands. They have been counting financial loss. They had demanded eviction of the vested quarter to ensure smooth supply of irrigation water which could play crucial role for the socio-economic state of the farmers, fishermen and others at no delay.
