More than 500 palm saplings have been planted in Uthli village of Jibannagar upazila of Chuadanga to protect against environmental disasters, natural calamities, lightning, road erosion and restore the balance of the environment.
Besides, initiatives have been taken to make people aware about the benefits of palm trees. Haji Mohammad Ali Azgar Togar, MP of Chuadanga-2 constituency, inaugurated the program by planting palm saplings at Rupirchara on Uthli-Begumpur road in Jibannagar upazila at 11am on Tuesday. Abzalur Rahman Dhiru, a prominent agri-entrepreneur from Uthli village, personally took the initiative to plant palm saplings.
Haji Mohammad Ali Azgar Togar, Member of Parliament, who was the chief guest at the event, said that the palm tree is environmentally friendly as well as prevents soil erosion, especially in the face of erosion in rainwater. In addition, the extinct palm tree is home to various species of birds, including the almost extinct babui bird. The most profitable thing is that there is a huge demand for immature or raw palm seeds or shells from these palm trees, which have grown in a very careless manner.
The amount of palm produced by a palm tree is enough to sell a few thousand taka worth of ripe palms after selling the palm seeds for about 10 to 12 thousand taka a year.
