A total of 319,131 sacrificial animals were prepared for the Eid-Ul-Azha this year. The demand of the sacrificial animals in the district this year is 189,740.
The farmers have started preparing to sale the animals in different parts of the country, specially, at Gabtali in Dhaka, Cumilla, Sylhet and Chattogram cattle markets.
The department of livestock in Jhenaidah said that the sacrificial animals worth Tk 1,000 crore were sold in the district last year. The amount might be increased this season.
Abdul Alim Mia, a farmer of Habibpur Madhyapara in Shailkupa municipality in Jhenaidah said that he has been rearing two cows to sell them on Eid. He was expecting at least Tk 2.50 lakh. The profit margin is reduced as the fodder prices, treatment and other costs were increased abnormally in the market. Each and every cattle rearing farmers and dairy farm owners were affected due to excessive cost.
Jakir Mollah, resident of the same village, said cattle heads rearing or fattening become a challenge for the farmers or farm owners as the price of all materials related to cattle farming and food price is too high in the market. Rearing the sacrificial animals is a losing concern for all. But the farmers or farm owners could not leave it as they get instant cash before the Eid every year.
According to a source related to the office of the district livestock officer in Jhenaidah, the yearly demand for animals is 189,740 this year. In the current season, the farmers and cattle farm owners had prepared a total of 319,131 animals in the district. A total of 129,391 animals are surplus than the demand.
District Livestock Officer in Jhenaidah Dr Subrata Kumar Banerjee said the individual farmers and cattle farm owners in Jhenaidah take a good care of their animals and play significant role in the sector. They prepare the animals worth at least Tk 1,000 crore in a year.
