Over 100 villages inundated in Ukhiya

The low-lying areas of Ukhiya upazila in Cox’s Bazar, including Rohingya camps, have inundated due to continuous rainfall. The croplands and vegetable gardens also went under water.

Many houses and roads were damaged due to the torrential rain and gusty wind. Moreover, three Rohingyas of the same family were killed in a landslide. Three boatmen went missing in the sea during the bad weather. Meanwhile, the people of the areas have been fearing that the situation may be worsened as rain continued.

After visiting Haldia Palong, Jalia Palong, Ratna Palong, Raja Palong and Palong Khali unions of the Upazila, it was seen that more than 100 villages of the areas were inundated due to the heavy rain.

Moreover, Rohingya camps also inundated. Many houses and roads were submerged due to the torrential rain. The victims have been suffering more as there was no electricity. Five trawlers were floated at Patuartek point during the storm. Three boatmen went missing in the incident.

One of the flood victims of Rumkha Monir Market area, Shafiul Alam, said several villages of the area were inundated. The fish of the ponds were floated due to the flood. 

Moktar Ahmed Labhu of the same area said the waterlogging would have not been take place, if there would be proper drainage system and planned buildings.

Saikat Barua, resident of Chaudhury Para, said many villages of Ukhiya were inundated due to heavy rain and flood. The situation of our Chaudhury Para is more miserable. There is no electricity and mobile phone connection. We can’t contact with anyone. Torrential rain has been experienced on Friday and Saturday.

Belal Hossain Sayeedi, resident of Pashchim Ratna village, said many areas of Pashchim Ratna village under Ratna Palong union 9 no. ward were flooded. Around 300 houses of the village have been inundated and approximately 500-600 families were marooned in the village. The people of the area have been suffering a lot.

According several sources and after visiting several areas, it was seen that more than 100 villages of Ukhiya were inundated due to heavy rain, onrush from hills and tide from the sea. So, around 30,000 people were marooned. Many houses, roads, culverts, gardens and trees were damaged. Moreover, the electricity connection was disrupted as well.

Abdul Mannan, assistant meteorologist at Cox's Bazar office of the Department of Meteorology, said 457 millimeters rain was recorded in the last 24 hours in Cox’s Bazar. It was the highest record of rainfall in 24 hours. Many places of the district, including Ukhiya, were waterlogged.

Haladia Palong Union Parishad Chairman Imrul Kayes Chaudhury said Rumkha Chaudhury Para, Bou Bazar, Paglir Beel, Boro Beel, Moni Market and other areas were flooded. The vegetable lands and croplands of Aman paddy went under water.

Local fish farmers, Abdul Karim and Hamid, said fishes of several enclosures and ponds were floated due to the flood. 

SM Syed Alam, Jalia Palong Union Parishad Chairman, said several hundred families of Daile Para, Nombori Para and Ghat Ghor Para are marooned. 

Upazila Agriculture Officer Nizam Uddin said paddy fields, vegetable lands and betel leaf gardens were damaged due to the heavy current of the water. 

Upazila Project Implementation Officer ATM Kausar said kutcha roads and culverts of the villages were damaged. The amount of loss could not be estimated immediately, he added.

Ukhiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer Tanvir Hossain said there are more fear of landslides due to the torrential rain in Ukhiya Upazila. Work is being continued to shift the people living on hills or adjacent to the hills to the safer places. The administration and relief organisations have been working for rehabilitation and relief materials distribution among the people in the affected areas.
