The 2022 Oscars Ceremony will have a host. The Academy Awards have aired without a host for the last three years. After Kevin Hart stepped down from the position after coming under fire for old homophobic tweets, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences thought it wise to go without a host for the first time since 1989. The ceremony proved successful for ABC which continued without a host for the next two years. Instead of hosts, the time slots were replaced with performances and presenters.
According to The Wrap, Craig Erwich, head of ABC and Hulu announced that the 2022 Oscars ceremony will have a host. The news comes after Glen Weiss was announced by AMPAS to direct the ceremony for the seventh year in a row. Erwich refrained from announcing who will host the 94th Academy Awards following Jimmy Kimmel as the last host of the show back in 2018. The 2022 Oscars will air on ABC on March 27.
With the nominees list predicted to be announced sometime in February, the details on the 2022 ceremony will continue to slowly make news. Notably, the live ceremony has dropped in ratings on ABC over the last few years. The host announcement could aid in viewership numbers. They typically choose comedians to host the event, but there has been speculation over what direction AMPAS will take in its choice for a host. With the Golden Globes refraining from airing on television and hosting a ceremony, the 2022 Oscar’s ceremony could prove whether the traditional, prestigious televised awards ceremony even works in today’s ever-changing industry.
