The government has a plan to construct 238 kilometres underground rail tracks at different routes to ease and smooth transportation for the city dwellers. The government is going to construct underground rail lines imitating the design of the subway system in Osaka city.
According to sources, the government will construct at least 20-25km underground subway at all routes in the capital. Earlier, the Road Transport and Bridges ministry planned to construct underground rail subway at four routes but now it will construct more underground rail lines.
In this regard, the ministry has sent a proposal on feasibility study of construction of subways in the Dhaka city to the planning commission, sources added. The project worth Tk 224.59 crore was supposed to be completed by 2020. But now the ministry has amended the proposal and sent it to the commission for approval.
The revised scheme which will cost Tk 322 crore and will be completed by June 2021, a senior official of the planning ministry told Bangladesh Post. The project would get the approval in no time, the official said. Under the feasibility study, the ministry has changed designs including routes, alignments and length, geo technical investigation and traffic survey direction.
Scrutinizing primary designs, land acquisition plan and financial assistance, the ministry will go for implementation of the revised project. The ministry will implement the project with foreign assistance or Government to Government (G2G) basis. The government has already integrated three metro rail projects- MRT-1, MRT-5 and MRT-6 where two routes MRT-1 and MRT-5 have underground rail tracks.
Imitating designs, the government will establish underground rail tracks covering entire Dhaka. The routes are---26.29km from Tongi to Sadarghat, 17.63km from Gabtoli to Purbachal, 16.63km from Bosila to Kayetpara and 13km from Hazaribagh to Rajarbagh.
13km from Kamrangirchar to New Market, 14km Bosila to Malibagh, 14km from Gabtoli- Sashanghat, 13.76km Gabtoli to Purbachal, 28km from Tongi to Jheelmil and 26.32km Tongi to Sadarghat will be constructed underground rail tracks. Earlier, four routes have been selected. The routes are--- Tongi to Narayanganj via Sayedabad, Aminbazar to Sayedabad, Gabtoli to Keranignaj and Rampura Television Station to Sadarghat where 20-25km routes be constructed underground.
