Organic compost increases crop production in Jhenaidah

Application of organic matter in soil has been increasing the production  and reducing cost gradually in Jhenaidah district. The farmers practicing the organic matters, especially, vermi-compost and trico-compost, are quite hopeful that the use of chemical fertilizers might be reduced within a few years if the organic matters are used by the farmers and patronized by the government sector like department of agriculture extension (DAE) and others for environment-friendly crop and vegetables farming throughout the country.

Farmers and organic manure selling agents in Jhenaidah said the demand of the ecology-friendly vermi compost and trico compost is increasing at places of the district as the farmers are benefited applying the same. Further, the cost of production for the manure was reduced to 25 percent.

Farmer Rustam Ali, also a union parishad councilor of Raghunandanpur village said they have been applying vermi compost and trico compost produced by Harun Organic Agro Farm. Their plots with onion, banana and T Aman had provided better yield when they ad applied the organic matter. They said the manure cost was reduced to 25 percent while it was 100 percent for the chemical fertilizers.

Organic manure dealer Asad Biswas at Bakshipur Bazer in same area said he has been selling both vermi compost and trico compost among the farmers. 

The farmers applying the same have been informing him of better response from the manures as it increases yield, while costing least for manure purposes. Harun Organic Agro Farm entrepreneur Maniruzzaman Sajib of Raghunandanpur village when contacted said he has started the trade with the assistance of upazila agriculture office at Shailkupa. Further, rural development academy (RDA) at Bogura, voluntary organization Unnayan Dhara (UD) and farmers’ forum Swadhin Krishak Sangathan have been providing technical assistance fir the entrepreneur.

He said he had initiated the activities since last year following his four-father’s business farming when the farmers were mostly dependent of chemical farming as against the traditional natural farming with cow-dung etc. 

His father Harun has been inspiring him to go ahead for safer and cost-effective food production for the farmers like him.

Upazila agriculture officer (UAO) in Shailkupa Akram Hossain when contacted said as part of government’s organic farming expansion activities at farmers’ level, they have been rendering assistance towards the organic manure producers like Harun Organic Agro Farm of Raghunan­danpur. 

Further, DAE has been encouraging entrepreneurs to disseminate the activities to enrich organic matters in soil when the percentage of organic matter was not up to the mark for smooth agriculture productions. DAE has been arranging their required organic manure from the entrepreneur for their demonstration plots. Moreover, they have been conducting awareness among the farmers and publicity for massive at paces. 

A good number of nationally reputed entrepreneurs including high profile government officials and individuals have already purchased organic manure form Harun Organic Agro Farm. 

The produces of the entrepreneur has been playing role in organic matter increasing activities in the soil of the area as well as other surrounding areas, UAO Akram Hossain added.
