The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has clarified that only individuals with MBBS or BDS degrees can use the title "Doctor" in Bangladesh. The ministry stated that any other use of the title is not permitted and that recent claims about health assistants using the title are unfounded rumors.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, the ministry referred to the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council (BMDC) Act of 2010, which clearly states that only those who have graduated with an MBBS or BDS degree can use the title "Doctor." No one else is allowed to do so.
The ministry emphasized that no officer of the BMDC has the authority to change or modify this law. The power to make any changes to the law lies solely with the national parliament. Therefore, any information suggesting otherwise should be considered false.
The ministry also urged everyone to avoid spreading or believing in rumors regarding the use of the title "Doctor" by individuals who are not qualified with MBBS or BDS degrees. The clarification aims to ensure that there is no confusion among the public about who is allowed to use this title.
This announcement comes in response to concerns raised by some individuals about the use of the title by health assistants. The ministry's notice serves as a reminder to the public that the title "Doctor" carries specific qualifications and that only those who meet these qualifications are entitled to use it.
Everyone is advised to be careful and avoid spreading misinformation on this matter. The ministry hopes this clarification will put an end to the rumors and maintain the integrity of the medical profession.
