OMS of rice launched

Amid the ongoing nationwide lockdown due the coronavirus, local administration launched the open markets sale of rice and distributed it through ration in Cox’s Bazar municipality on Tuesday. Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissi­oner Kamal Hossain inaugurated the program in the ward no. 9 of the municipality.

Municipality Mayor and Awami League’s district unit General Secretary Mujibur Rahman, Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Masudur Rahman Mollah, District Food Controller Afif Bhuiyan and councilor 2 Helal Uddin Kabir, among others, were present on the occasion. 

The program, which is an addition to the ongoing OMS of flour in the area, would continue till the dated fixed by the government, Mayor Mujibur said.

As coronavirus reduced the people’s purchasing power, this special OMS programme will cover day laborers, rickshaw and pullers, transport workers, peddlers, tea vendors, beggars, vagabonds, and member of transgender community along with the people who now become jobless.

A master roll containing consumer’s details including mobile number if applicable will be maintained to implement the program.

Multiple members of same family and a family that receives benefits from any program like Vulnerable Group Development are not eligible to get the services.

Under the OMS, maximum 2 tonnes of rice will be sold the each spots, which will mostly be located nearly the inhabiting areas of the low income group people. 

A consumer can purchase maximum 5 kg of rice in a week after showing national identity card.OMS will remain open for three days a week -- Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday from 10 am to 3 pm daily with following hygienic guidelines to prevent corona infection, the DC said. Law enforcement and municipality authorities will monitor the programme.
