Community transmission of the South African variant of the coronavirus, Omicron, has occurred in our country, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
At the same time, it has been warned that Omicron is gradually taking the place of Delta.
DGHS spokesperson Prof Dr Nazmul Islam provided the information during the regular health bulletin of the department on the coronavirus situation of the country on Sunday.
Nazmul Islam said that the symptoms of Omicron have similarities with the seasonal flu.
“About 73 percent of people infected with Omicron have runny nose. 68 percent have headache, 64 percent have fatigue, and 60 percent are sneezing, 60 percent of the patients have sore throat, and 44 percent have cough,” he said.
He further said that the advice of a doctor should be taken in any case.
“If the number of patients increases day by day and if we continue to disobey the rules of hygiene, the number of patients will increase further. It will put additional pressure on the health system. If we want to overcome this situation, we must adhere to the rules of health,” he added.
The spokesman for the health department said that coronavirus infections have been on the rise in Bangladesh since late December.
“On January 22, the infection rate went over 28 percent which was 17.82 percent at the beginning of the week,” he said.
Mentioning that the number of patients in the hospital is increasing, the official said, “The number of patients has been steadily increasing since the end of last year till the beginning of this year. The number of patients seeking treatment in hospitals is increasing. In the last 24 hours, against the collection of 100 samples, the positivity rate went over 28. The average rate so far is 13.86 percent.”
