The vice-chancellors of National University (NU) and Jagannath University (JnU) resigned on Sunday, following the recent political changes in the country.
Since the removal of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5, amid a mass student uprising, a total of 11 public university vice-chancellors have stepped down from their posts. Along with the vice-chancellors, the registrar, proctor, and the entire proctorial body of JnU also resigned on Sunday. Additionally, the pro-vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University (JU) resigned from his position.
Professor Md Mashiur Rahman, who was the vice-chancellor of National University, confirmed his resignation. He mentioned that he had already returned to his previous position as a professor in the sociology department at Dhaka University. Professor Rahman was appointed as the NU vice-chancellor on May 30, 2021.
At Jagannath University, vice-chancellor Professor Sadeka Halim, proctor Professor Jahangir Hossain, and the entire proctorial body submitted their resignation letters to the acting registrar Professor Aynul Islam. Professor Islam also resigned from his position. The resignations at JnU came after students issued a 24-hour ultimatum, demanding the resignation of the vice-chancellor, registrar, proctorial body, and hall provost. At Jahangirnagar University, Professor Mohammad Mostofa Feeroz, the pro-vice-chancellor for academic affairs, also resigned. Efforts to reach him for comments were unsuccessful.
Additionally, the principal of Government Titumir College in Dhaka, Professor Ferdous Ara Begum, resigned following demands from students, according to a senior official of the college. As of Sunday, the vice-chancellors of 11 public universities, including Dhaka University and Rajshahi University, have resigned from their posts.
