Pabna Mental Hospital is the first and the only mental hospital in Bangladesh. It was established in 1957 by the then Civil Surgeon of Pabna District in a local landlord's house. In 1959 it was shifted to Hemayetpur, about 8 km from the district town, on an area of 10 acres donated by one Mr. Mohammad Ali Mia who had been its life member since inception. The present building complex with two storeys was built during 1962-63 at a cost of Tk 1 lakh donated by another life member late Abdul Aziz Chowdhury (1916-1974). A new block has been added recently to accommodate more patients and staff members as well as provide better facilities for treatment and training purposes. The total bed strength is now 150 including 20 female patients which are all occupied most of the time due to lack of alternative accommodation elsewhere.
