No room for excuses

Nazmul Hossain Shanto, the captain of the Bangladesh cricket team, appeared at the post-match press conference fully prepared to address the barrage of questions regarding the team's recent Test series defeat against Sri Lanka. The spotlight was expected to fall on the team's fielding and catching performance, which had been notably subpar, particularly during the Chittagong Test.

Nazmul responded with openness, stating, "The team has put in ample practice in fielding. During these sessions, every catch was taken without fail. The reasons behind our on-field lapses remain elusive. However, I can affirm that the team was well-prepared in terms of fielding, yet, regrettably, we failed to secure crucial catches during the matches."

The captain also shouldered the blame for the batting lineup's shortcomings. He acknowledged that the batsmen did not perform up to their known capabilities, expressing, "Throughout the entire series, our batting did not meet the standards we set for ourselves. There is no room for excuses. Despite potential justifications, the fact remains that as a team, we did not deliver strong batting performances across all four innings of the two matches."

Following such disappointing performances, it's natural for the team to experience a sense of regret. Nazmul conveyed this sentiment, emphasizing, "The feeling of disappointment that follows poor team performance is palpable, and the drive to improve for the betterment of the team is a constant presence among all players." The series was marred by repeated instances of the Bangladesh batsmen getting out to ill-advised shots, sparking widespread discussion. Nazmul pointed to the team's inexperience, remarking, "We have a youthful squad, with several emerging players.

Their experience is limited. With time and continued play, the necessary habits and skills should develop. The desire and eagerness to enhance their game are present in all team members, and I believe that with time, this team will gradually learn to make better decisions."

The preparation of the batsmen was less than ideal, having transitioned from a series of white-ball cricket matches in domestic leagues to the Test format. Nazmul, however, refused to let the cricket schedule serve as an excuse, stating, "This could be cited as a contributing factor, but I do not wish to use it as such.

In the current climate of cricket, we must adapt to the ongoing demands of the game. Yes, those who are not involved in all three formats might have more opportunities to prepare.

Nonetheless, we must adjust our preparations accordingly. We should tailor our practice and readiness with the mindset of adapting to and excelling in all three formats of the game."
