BNP-Jamaat terrorists in separate incidents torched six buses, two trucks and a covered van in Dhaka, Gazipur, Chattogram, Bogura, Natore, and Sirajganj on Monday the second day of the two-day blockade of road, rail, and waterways enforced by BNP and its allies.
Dhaka: A bus of Tanjil Paribahan was set ablaze in Gulistan’s Zero Point area, near the Awami League office, at around 2:23pm, said the Fire Service and Civil Defence media cell.
Two firefighting units from Siddique Bazar Fire Station managed to douse the blaze.
Hasan, helper of the bus, said, “When we just crossed the Zero Point’s traffic signal at around 2:30pm. A passenger on the bus started shouting seeing the fire.”
“We all got off the bus after hearing the passenger scream. The fire spread to the entire bus within seconds. There were not many passengers on the bus,” he added.
Meanwhile, just an hour after the incident, at least two on-duty traffic police sergeants were injured after a crude bomb exploded at Gulistan area in the capital at around 3:44pm on Monday.
One of the injured was identified as Sergeant Rezaul, and the identity of the other officer could not be known yet. Both of them received primary medical treatment.
Gazipur: BNP-Jamaat arsonists set fire to a moving passenger bus and hay-laden truck in Gazipur on Monday.
A bus was set on fire on the Chandra-Navinagar road at Jirani Bazar around 9:00am, and a hay-laden truck was set on fire in front of the Chandra Forest office in Kaliakair upazila around 4:00am.
Kashimpur police station Officer-in-Charge (acting) Syed Rafiul Karim said the bus was heading towards Dhaka from Chandra of Kaliakair upazila. When the bus reached the Jirani Bazar area, smoke started coming from the back of the bus. When the driver stopped the bus, the passengers hurriedly got off.
Later people from the area came and put out the fire. Several seats inside the bus were burnt.
Kaliakair police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Akbar Ali Khan said the hay-laden truck was coming towards Dhaka from North Bengal. When the truck came in front of the Chandra Forest office on the Dhaka-Tangail highway, miscreants set it on fire. It burnt most of the hay on the truck.
Kaliakair Fire Service Station officer Iftekhar Chowdhury Raihan said a fire service unit rushed to the spot and extinguished the blaze.
Bogura: BNP-Jamaat arsonists set fire to a truck at Banani 2nd floor bypass in Bogura at around 1:50am on Monday.
Chattogram: BNP-Jamaat miscreants set fire to a passenger bus and vandalized another on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Akbar Shah and Dampara areas of Chittagong on Sunday night.
Miscreants set fire to a Relax Paribahan bus in the Dampara area after smashing its windows. Nazim Uddin, the bus driver’s helper right hand was burnt when he tried to douse the fire.
Khulshi police station's Officer-in-Charge Rubel Hawlader confirmed the incident, saying that they were trying to identify the perpetrators.
Miscreants also set fire to a parked bus on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Akbar Shah area around 9:35 pm last night.
On information, two firefighting units rushed to the spot and doused the flame immediately, said deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence department (Agrabad division office) Md Abdur Razzak.
Sirajganj: a covered van was set on fire in Ullahpara upazila around 9:50pm, said Rashed Bin Khalid, duty officer of the Fire Service and Civil Defence control room.
The front cabin of the van and the goods inside were burnt in the fire. The driver and his helper were unharmed as they ran away from the van.
On information, police and fire service personnel reached the spot and brought the fire under control.
Natore: two parked buses were set ablaze in the district Sadar Upazila’s Boro Harishpur area around 10:45pm on Sunday.
So far, 252 vehicles and establishments have been set on fire during the blockades and hartals since October 28, according to the fire service.
