No plan to privatise any sugar mill yet: Minister

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, MP has said that the government has no intention of closing any sugar mill and giving it to the private sector. Instead, this government has taken initiative to reorganize the sugar industry. 

Following this footsteps, these sugar mills are being modernized similar to those in various developed countries. The tender process for that has already started. Arrangements will be made to extract sugar from sugar beet as well, he added.

The Industries Minister said this while visiting Thakurgaon Sugar Mill on Thursday afternoon. He also said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's pledge was to create employment in the country. As a part of this, initiative has been taken to set up Thakurgaon sugar mill. 

In addition, new people will be recruited under the purview of the Sugar Food Corporation. At the same time, there are plans to involve various investors, so that even an inch of land of the sugar mill does not remain uncultivated.

Railway Minister Nurul Islam Sujan, Bangladesh Awami League presidium member Ramesh Chandra Sen, Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Dr Kamruzzaman Selim and other AL leaders were also present at the time.
