As there is no canteen at Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Central Library of Dhaka University, more than 23,000 students are facing problem.
Not only that, many times it is difficult to attend to the classes due to food problems.
According to social science faculty, arts faculty and central library administrative office, they have told our correspondent that in Social science faculty current students number approximately are 14,000 , in arts faculty 7,000 to 7,500 and in central library 1000 more students go to study.
In this regard, Ismail Hossain, a third-year student of Dhaka University's Department of Peace and Conflict, said, "If there are classes in the afternoon, we have to go without food for a long time." Because there is no good food shop, no canteen. Therefore, even if there is a class in the afternoon, we cannot go hall for lunch.” On the contrary, the VC of the university claims that there is DUKSU cafeteria and a lot of food shops here for the students. But the students claim that the food is unhealthy and tasteless. A student quipped, "It's foolish to expect good food where a chicken is made 49 slices.
Samia Iffat, a student of political science department, said that the canteen is definitely needed in the faculty of sociology. Girls have to go far to boys hall or arts hall for food, there is no healthy food and have to eat fried food in front of library. A canteen with confectionery shop is very much needed.
Zidan Sarkar, a 1st year student of philosophy department, said, I ate a few times as a hobby after being admitted to the university, but the quality of the food was so bad that I never went again.
Where do students eat lunch?
Usually, most of the students of Social Science Faculty, Arts Faculty and Central Library of Dhaka University eat lunch at Fine Arts Faculty.
Students claim that the food of the Faculty of Fine Arts is somewhat good but these cooked foods are served in an unhygienic environment.
It can be seen on the ground that the crow and the students are eating together. The students eat food among various garbage including dogs.
Besides, students also eat fast food in front of Hakim Chatwar or library due to lack of time. Due to poor quality of food and serving in unsanitary environment, this food causes various diseases. As a result, there are frequent incidents of students getting sick after eating this food.
Rasheda Irshad Nasir, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, said, "It has been some time since I took charge as the Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences. I don't know if this was planned before. But if any decision is made then we will inform.
When asked about any decision has taken to prevent this problem to prof. Abdul basir, Dean of Arts faculty, said, “we have food shop. If you see hakim chattar, in front of central library and behind the arts faculty, a lot of shops here. But unfortunately, they are unable to provide hygienic food. It's a matter of concern”.
