NID applications of expatriates can’t be cancelled: EC

The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday said that NID application of expatriates cannot be canceled but may be rejected due to lack of documents. 

‘If there is a shortage of documents, the expatriates will have to take hearing compulsorily’, the EC said. 

The organisation has asked relatives to collect documents if necessary.

The registration process of Bangladeshi expatriate as voters in United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Italy, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Malaysia has started. Smartcard distribution has already been launched in the United Arab Emirates, Italy, Kuwait, Qatar, United Kingdom and Malaysia.

Subsequently, NID activities are planned to be undertaken in Oman, Bahrain, Jordan, Singapore, Lebanon, Libya, Australia, Maldives.

The commission led by KM Nurul Huda took up the initiative of providing NID abroad in 2019 after receiving the instructions from the Prime Minister's Office. Then on 

February 12, 2020, the EC launched the online voting process for UK expatriates.

Earlier, this programme was started on November 18, 2019 among the expatriates of the United Arab Emirates. Before that, on November 5 of the same year, the process of online application was inaugurated as part of inclusion in the voter list and issuance of Smart National Identity Cards to eligible Bangladeshis in Malaysia.
