The newly elected Mayors of Dhaka City Corporations of south and north may take over their official charge in the middle of next May, said sources. According to sources, they will have to wait for about three and a half months as the current tenure of DSCC Board will end on May 16 while the current tenure of DSCC Board will end on May 13.
Barrsiter Fazle Nur Taposh has been elected as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Atiqul Islam as the mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) in the elections held on February 1. It should be mentioned that the city corporations are run through the Local Government Act. And, as per the Act, ‘No newly elected Mayor or Ward Councillor will be able to take over his or her charge until the tenure of their previous elected Mayor or Ward Councillor is over.
As per the Act, Fazle Nur Taposh will be able to take office as the DSCC Mayor after May 17 and Atiqul Islam will be able to take charge of his office as the DNCC Mayor after May 14. The Local Government Act also says that during these periods, earlier elected Mayors of the two city corporations will act as the Mayors. As a result, Sayeed Khokan will remain as the DSCC Mayor until Taposh takes over while the incumbent DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam will act as the acting DNCC Mayor.
As per the rules, earlier elected Ward Councillors of both the DSCC and DNCC will also remain in charges of their respective wards until they take over their charge after May 17 and May 14 respectively. Replying to a query, newly elected DSCC Mayor Fazle Nur Taposh told media that the earlier elected Mayors and Ward Councillors will remain in their position until their tenures end.
“We will take over our charges at the end of their full tenure,” said Taposh and continued saying that there is no scope of taking over the charges before the completion of the tenures of the earlier elected Mayors or ward councillors. Incumbent DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam, who has been reelected as the DNCC Mayor for the second consecutive time, also said the same thing and added that they would take over their charges after the Gadgets are circulated by the Election Commission (EC).
Meanwhile, the EC on Wednesday circulated the gadgets regarding the newly elected Mayors of DSCC and DSCC as well as the Ward Councillors of both the city corporations. The EC circulated the gadgets after three days of the elections held on February.
EC Secretary (Election Director-2) Atiar Rahman confirmed it as saying that with the approval by the EC, the Bangladesh Government Press authorities have published the gadgets on Wednesday. He, however, said in the gadget, only the name of newly elected Councillor of Ward 31 was not published as the result in the election of that Ward remains withheld.
