Next year, a new curriculum will be introduced for Class 10 students in secondary schools. Unlike the old curriculum, which used the same books for both Class 9 and 10, the new curriculum will have separate books for each grade. The SSC exams will now be based only on the Class 10 textbooks.
The National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB) has finished writing the new Class 10 textbooks. They are now being reviewed and prepared for printing. Other class textbooks will have some changes, mainly in history and social science subjects. However, these changes will not be major, according to a senior NCTB official.
In addition, the Ministry of Education has decided to remove the story titled 'Sharifa's Story' from the Class 7 textbook. This story, which discusses the transgender community, caused a lot of debate. The story will be replaced with a new one next year.
This decision came after a video went viral of a teacher tearing pages from the book. A committee reviewed the story and found various issues with it, recommending its removal.
The Ministry of Education has instructed the NCTB to take action on this matter. They have been advised to consult gender experts when selecting a new story. NCTB chairman (routine duty) Prof. Moshiuzzaman said that adding new stories will not affect the learning outcomes for students.
This change aims to improve the educational content and ensure that the learning experience for students remains effective and inclusive.
