The government has approved a new private university in Kushtia. The university is named 'Justice Abu Jafar Siddique University of Science and Technology.' With this, the total number of private universities in the country is now 115.
The Ministry of Education issued the approval on July 7. The university must follow 22 conditions. These include having a building of at least 25,000 square feet, either owned or rented. The university must have at least three faculties and six departments. They must also deposit at least one and a half crore rupees in a scheduled bank. These conditions are for a temporary period of seven years.
The chairman of the board of trustees for the new university is Nargis Afroz.Private universities have been established in the country since 1992. The goal was to increase access to higher education and reduce the number of students going abroad. In the beginning, the plan worked well. Many early universities are still doing well, and some new ones are also performing well.
However, there are concerns about the quality of most private universities. Some universities have poor conditions, which have been reported by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
