Newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin on Thursday said that he wishes to gift the nation a free, fair, and credible election.

"I want to present the nation with a free, fair, and credible election to establish people's voting rights. I will try to understand what needs to be done to achieve this and identify the areas requiring intervention," he said. He said this in an instant reaction to private television channel Somoy TV from his residence in Eskaton, Dhaka.

"I am fortunate that we have a reform commission working under the guidance of an expert like Badiul Alam Majumdar. Therefore, understanding the issues would not be difficult. My job will be to close the loopholes wherever they exist by addressing them," he added.

When asked what steps he would take to ensure a fair election, he replied, "I will take initiatives to create an environment where people can freely and spontaneously vote for whomever they choose. That will be my commitment and effort."

He further mentioned that he has not yet received any formal documents regarding his appointment.

"This is a very important responsibility. In the context of the present times, the responsibility has become even more significant. People have made sacrifices for the right to vote... In the last three elections — 2014, 2018, and 2024 — people could not cast their votes," he said.

Referring to the sacrifices made for voting rights, he said, "This is a heavy responsibility to bear, and I will move forward with this responsibility."

He said that he has learned a lesson from the previous elections.

"From those, we will take lessons and ensure that such elections do not happen again," he said.
