New BIMSTEC Secretary General joins office

Tenzin Lekphell, new Secretary General of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC), joined the office in Dhaka on Friday.

Member states appointed Lekphell, a bureaucrat turned politician, as the chief of this seven countries grouping in September through a virtual ministerial meeting following his country Bhutan’s nomination.

He is the third Secretary General of the BIMSTEC which connects South Asia with Southeast Asia. Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Thailand are the members of the Initiative headquartered in Dhaka.

The BIMSTEC said Md. Shamsul Haque, Additional Foreign Secretary (BIMSTEC & SAARC), and Directors of the BIMSTEC Secretariat, welcomed the new Secretary General in Dhaka on his arrival on Friday morning.

The Secretary General is appointed by the ministerial meeting for a non-renewable term of three years, upon nomination by a member state based on the principle of alphabetical rotation.
