After multiple protests from people of Netrokona and environmental group members, Signboard of ‘Betai River’ was installed on the bank of Betai River by district administration. Kendua UNO Main Uddin on Tuesday morning on behalf of Netrokona DC installed the signboard with people of the area and journalists.
Influential individuals in the area were trying to make this river known as a canal so that many illegal projects could be run in the area including land grabbing, illegal soil selling and several other projects.
Netrokona Deputy Commissioner Kazi Abdur Rahman thanking the authorities and people in the area mentioned that such deed will restore the environmental stability in the district. Strict actions will be taken in future if someone tries to manipulate the water bodies in the area illegally.
According to land office of Netrokona, this water stream is known as Betai River from the beginning. Due to constant land grabbing around the area, this river has shrunk and lost majority of its water flow. To capsize the opportunity, a team of perpetuators in the area were trying to announce the river as a canal.
Upon being notified about this criminal act, National River Conservation Commission immediately ordered the district administration to take necessary actions to restore the river. After that, Netrokona Deputy Commissioner Kazi Abdur Rahman led a committee to check the documents about the river.
It can be seen on the spot that several projects are ongoing showing this water body as a canal in Sandikona and Amtola Union on Kendua upazila. After constant protests from local environmental groups, National River Conservation Commission authorities ordered the Netrokona district administration to take immediate action.
DC Kazi Abdur Rahman said to the journalists that necessary steps have been taken to restore this water body as Betai River which was originally a river according to the land office records.
‘How this river has become a ‘canal’ at the first place, will be investigated strictly’, DC added.
