Negligence of doctors alleged

A four-year-old child, Samim Yasar Affan, tragically passed away due to alleged malpractice by two doctors at Kishoreganj Medilab Health Centre, according to a complaint filed by the family.

The complaint, submitted to the Civil Surgeon's office on May 23rd, accused ENT doctor Muhammad Taufiqul Islam Suman and anesthesiologist Md. Abu Taher Miya of administering improper treatment that led to the child's demise.

The incident unfolded when Affan's parents sought treatment for his cold, cough, and sore throat at Medilab Health Centre Limited on April 24th. Following consultations with Dr. Md. Taufiqul Islam Suman, the parents were advised to undergo tonsil and adenoid surgery for Affan, despite concerns about his pre-existing cold-related issues.

Despite reservations, the surgery was performed on Affan later that day. However, post-surgery complications arose, and Affan's condition deteriorated rapidly. Efforts to seek further treatment at Dhaka's Square Hospital were in vain, as Affan's critical condition rendered him ineligible for admission.

Upon admission to Universal Medical College and Hospital, Affan was diagnosed with pneumonia, a revelation that cast doubts on the necessity and appropriateness of the earlier surgeries. Tragically, Affan succumbed to his condition on May 17th, prompting outrage and demands for justice from his grieving family and the community.

The accused doctors defended their actions, citing a lack of pneumonia indications in test results and asserting that the surgeries were justified based on the presented symptoms. Civil Surgeon Saiful Islam assured that appropriate action would be taken following the receipt of the complaint.

In response to the incident, the local community staged protests, urging swift action against the accused doctors and demanding justice for Affan. Councillors, civil rights activists, and concerned citizens rallied at the Civil Surgeon's office, issuing a stern ultimatum for disciplinary action against the doctors within seven days, failing which they threatened to escalate their protests.
