The jetty of Bangladesh Navy at Inani sea beach in Cox’s Bazar collapsed partially on Thursday after a barge collided with it due to tidal wave caused by the approaching cyclone Dana.
Ukhiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Tanvir Hossain confirmed the matter. He said they are trying find in detail the reason behind the accident.
The locals said the sea was a little rough due to cyclone in the sea. There was high tide around 2:00am to 3:00am on Thursday. Due to the strong waves, a small barge that was tied to the jetty collided with it at that time and a part of the jetty collapsed.
They also said they were hearing loud sounds during midnight as the barge was tied to the jetty. However, no one is in the barge or jetty at that time. Even though a part of the jetty collapsed around 2:00am or 3:00am, no one was seen around the barge or the jetty till 10:00am.
Ships have been using the jetty to take tourists to St Martin’s Island since last year. Preparations were being made by the ship companies to use the jetty to take tourists to the island from November one. However, it collapsed due to the high tide on early Thursda
