Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Kamal Uddin Ahmed and five members have resigned from their posts. They submitted their resignation letters to the President on Thursday.
Those five NHRC members, who resigned are full-time members of the current commission Salim Reza, member. Aminul Islam, member Kangjari Chowdhury, member Dr. Vishwajit Chand and Dr. Tanya Haque
The resignation letter reads, for your kind information, I respectfully state that as the Chairman of the NHRC, I submitted my resignation to you on Thursday in accordance with the provisions of Section 64 (4) of the National Human Rights Commission Act, 2009, seeking relief from my post.
On December 10, 2022, the President appointed Kamal Uddin Ahmed as the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission with the rank of judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court. Prior to that, he served as a full-time member of the NHRC from 22 September 2019 to 23 September 2022.
Kamal Uddin has served as the Secretary of two of the most important ministries namely the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change Affairs. He was a member of the Department of Socio-Economic Infrastructure in the Ministry of Planning. Apart from this, he was a professor in the School of Business and Economics of North South University.
