The National Mourning Day and the 47th martyrdom anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was observed on Monday with due solemnity across Bangladesh and in different parts of the world.
To mark the day, the Bengali nation paid their highest tributes to the martyrs through various programmes.
Leaders and activists of different socio-cultural and political organisations including the Awami League, and people from all strata thronged the street in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban in capital’s Dhanmondi since morning to pay homage to the memory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Peoples flocked to the street in front of Bangabandhu Museum in the city’s Dhanmondi.
The National Mourning Day programme began with paying homage at the portrait of Father of the Nation in the morning.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina first paid homage at the portrait of the Bangabandhu at 6:30am. Members of a smartly turned out contingent of the armed forces gave guard of honour and the bugle played the last post. Then the Prime Minister offered fateha and took part in munajat.
Later, Sheikh Hasina as the party chief along with cabinet members and Awami League central leaders paid homage at the portrait of Bangabandhu.
Awami League Advisory council members Amir Hossain Amu and Tofail Ahmed, General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Presidium members Begum Matia Chaudhury, Dr Abdur Razzaque, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Abdur Rahman, Shahjahan Khan and AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Joint General Secretaries Mahbub UL Alam Hanif, Dr Dipu Moni, Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Organizing Secretaries Ahmad Hossain and Mirza Azam, Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Sujit Roy Nandi, Publicity Secretary Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap, Cultural Affairs Secretary Ashim Kumar Ukil, Labour Affairs Secretary Habibur Rahman Siraj, among others, were present at that time.
After paying homage, Sheikh Hasina went inside the historic house at Dhanmondi 32 and visited the memorials of his father. The Prime Minister stayed there for half an hour. Then the Prime Minister went to Banani graveyard for paying homage.
People from all strata including male, female, different school and college students and children gathered on Dhanmondi Road no-32 within 6:00am, wearing black badges and carrying black banners in their hands.
All the people recalled Father of the Nation and paid respects to him by placing floral wreaths at the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. People of all cast and creed started gathering in front of Bangabandhu’s residence from 7am Monday.
The Bangabandhu Museum remained open for the people after the Prime Minister left the place.
Dhaka North and South City units of Awami League, Awami Jubo League, Awami Swechhasebak League, Mahila Awami League, Jubo Mahila League, Jatiya Sramik League, Bangladesh Krishak League, Bangladesh Chatra League, Tanti League, Chatra League Dhaka University unit, also paid homage to the portrait of Bangabandhu at Dhanmondi.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed floral wreaths at the graves of the martyrs of August 15 including her mother, brothers and wives of his brothers at Banani at 8:30am. The prime minister offered fateha and took part in munajat.
Cabinet members and party central leaders, among others, were present during this time.
