The authorities will purchase Boro paddy from the growers directly so that middle men won’t be able to profit unfairly, Deputy Commissioner of Narail Anjumanara told the newsmen in a views exchange meeting at deputy commissioner’s conference room on Tuesday.

Deputy Commissioner of Narail also said, Member of parliament from Narail-2 constituency Mashrafe Bin Mortaza has sought Boro paddy will be purchase from marginal farmers directly at a fair price to avoid any sort of irregularities in the agriculture sector. District Food Controller office sources said, the government has started procurement of a record quantity of 3,908 metric tonnes of boiled Boro rice, 283 tonnes of ‘Atap’ rice and 1,459 tonnes of Boro paddy in three upazilas of Narail district this season.
Officials at district controller of Food Office on Tuesday told The Bangladesh Post that the procurement drive began from April 25 last and would continue till August 31 next in all three upazilas of the district as elsewhere in the country.
District Controller of Food Monotosh Kumar Majumder said the government is procuring record quality of boiled Boro rice, ‘Atap’ rice and Boro paddy aiming at ensuring fair market price to common farmers.
“Under the programme, we have completed signing of agreements with 52 millers to get supply of 3,908 tonnes of boiled Boro rice at Taka 36 per kg this season from the district,” he said.
Besides, 283 tonnes of ‘Atap’ Boro rice at Taka 35 per kg while the government will purchased 1,459 tonnes of Boro paddy directly from the farmers at Taka 26 per kg.
“Adequate steps have been taken to maintain complete transparency in the Boro rice and paddy procurement processes to make the government’s goal of ensuring fair price of the crop to common farmers successful,” District Controller of Food added.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Chinmoy Roy said farmers have exceeded fixed Boro rice cultivation target this season in the region following various effective steps of the government.
The farmers have cultivated Boro rice on 46,640 hectares of land, 2,060 hectares of land higher than the fixed target of bringing over 44,580 hectares of land under Boro farming this season in the district.
DAE district training officer Md. Nazrul Islam said adequate steps to ensure all facilities to farmers to achieve the Boro rice production target this season.
