On December 10, 1971, Mymensingh district was liberated from the Pakistani forces. Mymensingh region was freed from the barbaric attacks of the enemy.
As a reflection of joy, the people of Mymensingh observe the day as free day. Mymensingh Independence Day was celebrated on Sunday with due dignity.
On the occasion of celebrating the day, on Sunday (December 10) morning, the national and liberation war flags were hoisted at the city's Chotabazar Muktamanch.
Also, Mymensingh Divisional Commissioner Umme Salma Tanzia inaugurated the week-long programme by releasing balloons and pigeons.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Didare Alam Mohammad Maksud Chowdhury, Superintendent of Police Machum Ahmed Bhuiya, Mymensingh District Awami League President Ehteshamul Alam and General Secretary valiant freedom fighters (FFs) including Moazzem Hossain Babul were present on the occasion.
In the opening speech, the Divisional Commissioner said that today is a day of great tradition and glory for the people of Mymensingh. Recalling the memory of the organiser of the Liberation War, Matiur Rahman, he said, Mymensingh's son Matiur Rahman used to hoist the inaugural flag of this day every year.
Principal Matiur Rahman along with the freedom fighters hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh on the circuit house ground and declared Mymensingh free.
At the end of the speech, Divisional Commissioner Matiur Rahman sought forgiveness for the departed souls of all the freedom fighters.
Later, a colorful rally was taken out that paraded the main roads of the city and ended again at Chotabazar open stage. People from all walks of life including valiant freedom fighters, children of freedom fighters commanders, leaders and activists of Awami League, officials and employees of various government departments participated in the rally led by Divisional Commissioner.
Also a documentary on Liberation War and documentaries on Bangabandhu screened.
