To reduce the sudden burdens of dengue infections in the city, the government and its different allied organisations have taken comprehensive action programmes.
Apart from treatment services to the dengue affected people and suppling of anti-mosquitoes sprays at free of cost, legal actions are being taken through mobile court operations. A well-coordinated social awareness campaigns are also being implemented focusing on destroying breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes that carry and infect the deadly dengue virus.
Earlier, both Dhaka south and north city corporations have already launched free medical treatment services to the people affected by dengue infection from all the Matri Sadan and Mohanagar Chikitsa Kendra run by the city corporation authorities.
Sayeed Khokan, Mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation on Friday said, “We will supply free anti-mosquitoe sprays to all the educational institutions in DSCC areas to prevent reproduction of Aedes and other mosquitoes.”
The DSCC Mayor made the announcement while addressing a view exchange programme held at Shilpakola Academy on Friday. The meeting was organised to engage all the educational institutions and scout members in the awareness building campaign. The campaign will continue till August 1. The DNCC authorities also have taken the similar initiatives and held separate meetings with some educational institutions at the capital’s Mirpur areas.
Both the mayors, in the meantime, have also informed that they have launched a crash programme to free at least 30 residences from each of ward area from Aedes mosquitoes every day. Besides, separate teams will remain engaged to clean all the educational institutions.
The mayors also informed that mobile medical teams are on standby round the clock in different city areas to offer treatment facilities to any reported dengue case. Those medical teams are providing medicines free of cost in addition to providing free treatment facilities.
According to sources, the legal action teams are conducting mobile court operations against under-construction buildings which are believed to be potential breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitoes.
The DSCC authorities in last four days visited a total of 89 under-construction buildings where they inspected for mosquito larvae (eggs). On spotting the larvae the mobile courts realised Tk 2.7 lakh as fines from 9 of those under-construction buildings.
In similar manner, the city corporation in the north, DNCC has also conducted parallel mobile court operations against 7 building owners in the capital’s Gulshan and Banani areas and realised Tk 5 lakh as fines.
Meanwhile, Obaidul Quader, General Secretary of ruling Bangladesh Awami League, urged the citizens to get involved in social movement against dengue instead of creating panic. He made the request on Friday while addressing a press conference.
Earlier on Thursday, the country-wide week-long anti-mosquitoes programme was launched at the capital’s Manik Mia Avenue in front of the Parliament building.
The Bangladesh Army also launched an anti-dengue drive on Thursday. Army chief General Aziz Ahmed inaugurated the programme at the capital’s Cantonment area.
According to the Directorate of Health, a total of 7,515 people were infected with dengue since start of this month.
