In a daring daylight heist, a gang of muggers snatched Tk 10.75 lakh in cash by stopping an office vehicle in Mohammadpur on Sunday morning, officials reported.
The vehicle belonged to a distributor of Nestlé products, police said.
Hafizur Rahman, inspector (investigation) at Mohammadpur Police Station, said the incident occurred around 9:45 am in the Mohammadia Housing area.
He said that the robbers stole a bag containing Tk 10.75 lakh in cash. A case was being prepared in connection with the heist.
Saiful Islam, the area accountant for the Nestlé distributor, recounted the harrowing experience to reporters.
He explained that the team had left the office at 9:00 am to deposit the money at a bank. However, as they slowed down near Mohammadia Housing due to ongoing road repairs, six robbers on two motorcycles approached the vehicle.
The assailants smashed the side mirrors before positioning themselves in front of the car, forcing it to stop. Brandishing machetes and other weapons, the gang broke the car windows and attacked the occupants.
“The robbers fled with both the office’s cash bag and some money I had in my pocket,” Islam said.
This daring robbery has concerned residents and authorities, as this is not the first such incident in Mohammadpur.
Earlier on October 12, a robbery took place on the second floor of a five-storey residential building ‘Haji Vila’ near the Beribadh Tin Rastar Mor in Mohammadpur.
