Armed muggers on Wednesday snatched Tk 5.7 lakh from an expatriate on Dhaka-Aricha highway in Savar, on the outskirts of the capital, after shooting at the car carrying him in broad daylight.
The incident was reported from in Savar’s Vakurta area around 10:30am when 40-year-old Md Amanullah, from Keraniganj’s Shiraznagar area, and his wife were returning home by a private car after withdrawing the money from Aminbazar branch of Islami Bank Ltd.
According to the victim, around 10 muggers riding motorcycles intercepted the car at Vakurta road and began firing at them. They then snatched the money and fled the scene.
Locals rescued the couple and took Amanullah to Savar Health Complex.
Amanullah said her wife had seen some of the muggers walking around into the bank branch while they were withdrawing the money.
Masudur Rahman, assistant vice-president of Islami Bank, Aminbazar branch, told the Bangladesh Post, “Law enforcement agencies personnel visited the branch and took the CCTV footages.”
“Victim’s wife also came with them and identified one of the suspects by seeing CCTV footage,” he added.
Police are investigating into the incident and trying to arrest the muggers, said Mohammad Saiful Islam, inspector (investigation) of Savar Police Station.
