Mir Mahfuzur Rahman ‘Mugdho,’ a former student of Mathematics at Khulna University (KU), is now a symbol of bravery in Bangladesh’s history. Mugdho, 25, lost his life during the recent student protests against the Awami League government, becoming a martyr.
On July 18, Mugdho was helping students by distributing water during a demonstration in Uttara’s Azampur area in Dhaka when police opened fire. A bullet hit his forehead and pierced through his ear, ending his life. He posed no threat and was simply helping fellow students.
Teachers and students of KU mourned his loss deeply, remembering Mugdho as a bright and kind student. Professor Md. Azmol Huda of the Mathematics Discipline recalled his excellent analytical skills and leadership qualities. Mugdho graduated from KU as a 19th-batch student and later pursued his MBA at Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP).
Prof. Huda described Mugdho as a natural leader who helped others in academic tasks and was always ready to assist first-year students. Prof. Munnujahan Ara, also from KU, spoke with sadness, remembering his warm smile and how he always completed assignments with a positive attitude.
Mugdho was not only a talented student but also an active debater and guitar player. He dreamed of traveling around Bangladesh on his bike to see the lives of people in remote areas. Mugdho’s elder brother, Mir Mahmudur Rahman Deepto, shared that Mugdho had always stood against injustice. He was also a unit leader in the Armed Police Battalion Scout Group and won the "National Service Award" from Bangladesh Scouts for rescuing people during the Banani Fire in 2019.
KU and the nation will always remember Mugdho for his courage and kind heart.
