Lawmakers and representatives of development agencies on Tuesday stressed the need for enacting new laws to ensure the protection and rights of children engaged in domestic work.
New laws may be enacted if necessary to protect a large number of child domestic workers from physical, mental, economic and sexual abuse, they said while addressing a programme styled ‘Necessity of a Specific Law for the Rights and Protection of Children Engaged in Domestic Work’ held at the Parliament Secretariat.
Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haq Tuku attended the programme as chief guest.
Deputy Speaker Shamsul Haq Tuku said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working to ensure the protection of every child to make them worthy citizens of modern Bangladesh.
“If any amendment is needed, the law ministry and experts should prepare a comprehensive draft and present it to the government,” he said.
Mentioning various steps, including the formulation of laws and policies, the MPs said that the government is sincere in protecting the rights of the children.
Md Rashiduzzaman, Amatul Kibria Keya Chowdhury, Laila Parveen Sejuti, Ruma Chakraborty and Anima Mukti Gomes, among others, also spoke at the programme with Action for Social Development Executive Director MA Karim in the chair.
