Newly elected MPs (Members of Parliament) from the Awami League-led alliance will take oath today after winning a landslide victory in the 12th parliamentary elections, boycotted by Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury will administer oath to the MPs-elect at Parliament Secretariat at 10:00am.

Awami League president Sheikh Hasina is going to make a history by taking oath as prime minister for the fourth consecutive term. With this, she will become the country’s fifth prime minister.

Sheikh Hasina first led her party Awami League to office through 1996 national polls 21 years after the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.  She took oath as prime minister on June 23 that year.

The Awami League president formed government for the second term on January 6 after winning the December 29, 2008 elections with an absolute majority in parliament.

Sheikh Hasina took oath as prime minister for the consecutive second term on January 12 after winning the January 5, 2014 elections boycotted by the BNP-led alliance.

She formed the government on January 7 in 2019 after winning the December 30 national election held with the participation of all registered political parties.

Sheikh Hasina is the country’s lone premier who has served the country for 15 years in a row.

The MPs-elect from the ruling party alliance and opposition camps have already been in Dhaka to take oath. Earlier, they exchanged greetings with local leaders, activists and supporters .

The MPs-elect of the Jatiya Party will also take oath today cancelling its previous decision not to taking oath. Jatiya Party, through a press release, requested all of its MPs-elect to remain present at the office of deputy leader of parliament by 10am today (Wednesday).

As per the custom, MPs-elect of the party having majority will be sworn in first. Then, others including Jatiya Party will take oath.

After taking oath, the lawmakers will sign the attendance book. The Awami League Parliamentary Party is scheduled to sit for a meeting at 12:00pm to elect the Leader of the House.

The Election Commission (EC) officially published a gazette notification on the results of the 12th national elections with details of

298 newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs).

Elections in 300 constituencies were supposed to be held on January 7. But the EC postponed the polls in  Noagaon-2 seat following the death of an independent candidate Aminul Haq. Now polls in the constituency will be held on February 12.

The EC also withheld the results of Mymensingh-3  seat polls due to irregularities at a centre there . Now the polls of that centre will be held on January 13.

There is a constitutional obligation to take oath within three days after the publication of the gazette of the poll results.

As per the law, if any MP-elect refrains from taking oath within 90 days after the beginning of the first session or refrains from informing the Speaker, his/her membership will be cancelled.

Awami League won 222 seats, Jatiya Party (Ershad) 11, Workers Party, JSD and Kalyan Party got one seat each while independent candidates got 62 seats in the national election.

Meanwhile, the High Court on Tuesday asked the EC not to publish gazette notification on the results of the 12th national parliamentary elections in Dhaka-4 constituency.

The HC also issued a rule, asking the EC to dispose of within 10 days a plea for re-election in 18 polling centres over allegations of irregularities.
