Mother, son elected members in same union

In the fifth phase of UP elections, a mother and her son both were elected members in the same union of Padmapar in Shibchar of Madaripur.

It is learned that 3 people including Lutfunnesa Begum took part in the election for the reserved ward member posts of 1st, 2nd and 3rd of Kanthalbari Union of the upazila in the last UP election held on 5th January. And 4 people including his son Chunnu Mia participated in the election for the post of general member of 2nd ward. Lutfunnesa Begum contested the election with the mike symbol and her son Chunnu Mia with the rooster symbol. 

In the election, 653 votes were cast for the post of general member in the 2nd ward. Chunnu Mia was elected unofficially with 342 votes. His nearest rival candidate Ziaur got 67 votes for the football symbol. On the other hand, a total of 4, 344 votes were cast for the reserved member posts in wards 1, 2 and 3. Lutfunnesa was elected unofficially with 2, 247 votes. Her nearest rival candidate Taslima Akhter got 1653 votes for the sunflower symbol. In the fifth phase of the election, 11 chairman candidates, 21 reserved ward members and 6 general ward member candidates from Kanthalbari and Bandarkhola Unions participated. In these two unions, 25, 024 voters exercised their voting right in 83 polling booths in 18 wards. In this election 81% of the voters cast their votes. Like this step, in the previous two steps also Awami League had opened its candidature in the election of 18 unions. In those two stages, 80 percent of the voters cast their ballots.

Newly elected UP member Chunnu Mia said, Awami League's candidature was open in our upazila this time on the initiative of Chief Whip Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury. As a result, all the candidates participated in the election as independent candidates. The evaluation of the voters in the festive atmosphere of the election was extensive and the administration was strict. My mother and I have both won the love of the people.

Lutfunnesa, a newly elected reserved ward member, said she had been elected before but could not win. She is very old so this was her last choice. She has been able to explain it to the voters. 

So everyone in the area voted for her. In each ward she was elected with more votes than the rival candidate. As long as she live, she hopes to be by the side of the people in happiness and sorrow.

Confirming the victory of mother and son, Upazila Returning Officer Maksudur Rahman said that the election of Shibchar was a model election in the presence of a large number of voters without any kind of violence. Election authorities greet all the candidates including the winning mother and son.
