Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited-DPDC is going to introduce ‘Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition’ system (SCADA) to ensure more technology-dependent modern power distribution, which will help to improve better serve the consumers.
SCADA is a computer-based system for gathering and analyzing real-time data to monitor and control equipment that deals with critical and time-sensitive materials or events. This system continuously monitors the status of various equipment in substation and accordingly sends control signals to the remote control equipment.
Also, it collects the historical data of the substation and generates the alarms in the event of electrical accidents or faults. It restores the power service during fault condition and also maintains the desired operating conditions.
An official said that the DPDC operates mainly in the central, west and old part of Dhaka city and also most of Narayanganj city areas. If any fault occurs in the distribution system, it takes a long time to fix it. DPDC officials have to work hard to find out the fault. Sometimes, it also a lengthy process. But if there is a modern SCADA system, everything can be controlled at one point.
DPDC says the system will be connected to the national power grid. On the other hand, the substations include state-of-the-art automation and communication systems, which will be connected to the central SCADA system through optical fiber.
As a result, it will be possible to identify any fault and restore the power system in a short time. As a result, the power system of DPDC areas will come under automation, which is also claimed to be one of the milestones to build Digital Bangladesh.
DPDC Managing Director Engineer BikashDewan said, “After completion of the project our distribution system will be significantly efficient. We will be able to detect any fault easily by automation under the new technology. It will help the load management. As a result, the quality of our consumer’s service will increase a lot.”
Power Division officials said, “The project ‘Expansion and Strengthening of Power System Network’ under DPDC area has been undertaken in collaboration with China to facilitate the supply of electricity to the customers in the DPDC area and increase the power distribution capacity.
Under the project, a total of 14 substations with 132/33 KV each, 26 substations with 33/11 KV each will be set up. Besides, SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) system will also be introduced. With it will be built a modern mechanized warehouse, 132 KV with 653 km length underground and 33 KV with 700 km length distribution line including modern substation cum office / commercial / residential high rise building.
DPDC official said the government has adopted a comprehensive development plan for the development of power generation, transmission and distribution system to ensure uninterrupted electricity for all.
In addition to increasing power generation, various plans and activities have been taken for the infrastructural development of the distribution systems with a view to ensuring smooth and uninterrupted supply of electricity to the consumers. The smart-grid system will help achieve the government target.
